Believe
To believe: verbo ‘credere’.
Sono possibili due costruzioni:
1) SOGGETTO + BELIEVE + COMPLEMENTO OGGETTO
I believe Jane.
Credo a Jane (a quello che dice).
I don’t believe you.
Non ti credo.
Some people believe everything they hear.
Alcune persone credono a tutto quello che sentono.
I don’t believe a word of what she says.
Non credo a una parola di quello che dice.
ATTENZIONE: sebbene significhi ‘credere a’, in inglese NON si dice ‘*believe TO + qualcuno/qualcosa', ma ‘believe’ seguito direttamente dal complemento oggetto.
Si dice: I believe them. NON *I believe TO them.
2) SOGGETTO + BELIEVE + THAT + RESTO DELLA FRASE
We believe that you can become a star.
Crediamo che tu possa diventare una star.
It’s hard to believe that you have been in prison.
È difficile credere che sei stato in prigione.
- Believe in (phrasal verb): ‘credere in qualcosa’.
I don’t believe in ghosts.
Non credo ai fantasmi.
They really believe in you.
Credono molto in te (hanno molta fiducia in te).

Si crede che siano molto ricchi.
- You would not believe …: ‘non crederai mai …’
You’d not believe what happened to me this morning.Approfondisci would (condizionale)
Non crederai mai a quello che mi è successo questa mattina.
- Believe so: ‘credo di sì’.
- Believe not: ‘credo di no’.
- Is Tom still going out with Mary?
