Significa ‘come’, ‘in che modo’.

Può essere usato come interrogativo per chiedere ‘come … ? ’, oppure in frasi relative per spiegare in che modo fare qualcosa.

Si può usare per informarsi sulla salute di qualcuno.

'HOW' NELLE DOMANDE INDIRETTE

Nelle domande indirette, gli elementi della frase hanno un ordine diverso rispetto alle domande dirette.

Domanda diretta:

HOW + VERBO + COMPLEMENTO OGGETTO + ?
How old is Tom?
Quanti anni ha Tom?


Domanda indiretta:

FRASE DI PARTENZA + HOW + COMPLEMENTO OGGETTO + VERBO + ?
Do you have any idea how old Tom is?
Hai idea di quanti anni ha Tom?



ATTENZIONE: se nella domanda diretta è presente l'ausilare 'to do', per costruire la domanda indiretta l'ausiliare si omette.

Domanda diretta:

How does Sarah feel?
Come si sente Sarah?

Domanda indiretta:

Can you tell me how Sarah feels?
Mi puoi dire come si sente Sarah?
NON *Can you tell me how DOES Sarah feel?



‘HOW’ NELLE FRASI RELATIVE


I know how to do that.
So come farlo.

Tell me how you did it.
Dimmi come hai fatto.

This is how it should be done.
Questo è come dovrebbe essere fatto.
Il modo in cui dovrebbe essere fatto.


Si può usare come esclamazione per dire che qualcosa fa piacere.

HOW + AGGETTIVI


'How' può essere usato davanti a numerosi aggettivi per indicare il numero, l’età, la distanza, la misura.

- How much: quanto.
Usato con nomi non numerabili (soldi, zucchero, acqua, etc.)

How much sugar do you want?
Quanto zucchero vuoi?

How much is it?
Quant’è? (per chiedere il prezzo di qualcosa).

- How many: quanto.
Usato con nomi numerabili, che si possono contare (mele, persone, libri, etc.)

How many friends have you got?
Quanti amici hai?

- How often: quanto spesso, con che frequenza.
