Si usa il passato prossimo (‘present perfect’) quando un’azione o un evento avvenuto in passato continua ad avere effetti sul presente.
Il ‘present perfect’, come dice il nome, è un tempo presente. L’azione o evento avvenuto in passato ha un risultato presente.
Ciò che interessa maggiormente non è tanto il momento in cui è avvenuta l’azione, ma il suo risultato, gli effetti che ha attualmente.
Can you lend me some money? I’ve lost my wallet.‘I have lost my wallet’ significa che l’ho perso in un momento passato e ancora non l’ho ritrovato.
Puoi prestarmi dei soldi? Ho perso il mio portafoglio.
Non ha importanza quando l’ho perso, quello che veramente interessa è che al momento non ce l’ho.
È questo il risultato di un evento passato: attualmente sono senza portafoglio.
Altro esempio:
- Is Tom there?Tom è già uscito quando io chiedo di lui.
C’è Tom?
- No, he has gone out.
No, è uscito.
Non viene detto quando, e probabilmente non ha molta importanza il preciso momento in cui Tom esce.
Sta di fatto che adesso non c’è, ed è la cosa che a me interessa di più.
Approfondisci passato semplice o passato prossimo
Si usa il ‘present perfect’ per esprimere un’azione avvenuta in passato ma in un tempo non precisato.
Have you been to Rome?
Sei stato a Roma?
Have you finished your essay?
Hai finito il tema?
Visto che il tempo non è espresso o non si conosce, con il passato prossimo NON si usano parole come ‘yesterday’, ‘last week’, ‘five years ago’, che indicano invece azioni già concluse in passato.
Approfondisci gli avverbi di tempo
Il passato prossimo viene usato anche per parlare di un’azione iniziata nel passato, ma che dura ancora nel presente.
Per indicare la durata dell’azione si usa ‘for’.
Si usa invece ‘since’ per indicare quando l’azione è iniziata.
- How long have you been waiting?
Da quanto tempo stai aspettando?
- I’ve been waiting for two hours.
Sto aspettando da due ore.
- I’ve been waiting since midday.
È da mezzogiorno che aspetto.
FOR + PERIODO
I’ve worked here for two weeks.
Lavoro qui da due settimane.
She’s been living in London for ten years.
È da dieci anni che vive a Londra.
I haven’t seen him for months.
Non lo vedo da mesi.
SINCE + MOMENTO INIZIALE
I’ve worked here since Tuesday.
Lavoro qui da martedì.
She’s been living in London since 2010.
Vive a Londra dal 2010.
I haven’t seen him since Christmas.
Non lo vedo da Natale.

Da quanto tempo vi conoscete?
- We’ve known each other for fifteen years.
Ci conosciamo da quindici anni.

Il ‘present perfect’ spesso viene accompagnato da avverbi come ‘already’, ‘just’, ‘recently’, ‘so far’, ‘always’, ‘never’, ‘ever’.
