- Descrivere qualcuno o qualcosa.

Lei è bella.
London is a huge city.
Londra è una città enorme.
It was a good movie.
Era un bel film.
- Descrivere una condizione o uno stato di essere.
Jane is ill.
Jane è malata.

Non sono ricco.

Lei era felice.
He is always hungry.
È sempre affamato.
- Indicare l’età.
- How old are you?
Quanti anni hai?
- I’m 15 (years old).
Ho 15 anni.

Viene 30 sterline.

Quando il prezzo è la somma di un insieme di articoli, si può usare il verbo essere al futuro, sebbene il significato sia comunque presente.

Sono 30 sterline.

Viene usato in alcune locuzioni il cui significato in italiano è ‘avere … ’:
- To be cold/hot: avere freddo/caldo.
I am cold. NON *I have cold.
Ho freddo.
- To be afraid: avere paura.
I’m afraid of dogs. NON *I have afraid of dogs.
Ho paura dei cani.
- To be ashamed: avere vergogna, vergognarsi.
I’m ashamed of you.
Mi vergogno di te.
- To be hungry/thirsty: avere fame/sete.
